Barbie Movies Reviewed: Which Ones Are The Best?
74Barbie movies are the best!
Since 1959, girls have adored playing with Barbie dolls. Is it the glitter, the beautiful countenance or the detachable clothes that make Barbie so famous? From observing my little six-year-old girl, I would have to say it’s definitely the magic princess factor, followed by the fabulous ballgowns that would make any woman weep for her childhood – a time when anything was possible and when you could be rainbow coloured in every sense.
I’d like to share with you my pick of Barbie movies, so that you can choose the most appealing ones and age appropriate ones for your child or grandchild and give them a magical gift. I’ve scored my Barbie movies below, based upon how much my daughter and I have enjoyed them together. I hope that this information will help you in finding the perfect Barbie movie!
The Princess and the Pauper
One of our favourite Barbie movies, the Princess and the Pauper combines lots of great music and singing with cute pets, a handsome, noble prince and a fairytale story of interest to young children. There are some scary bits – but not as many as some of the other Barbie movies and my darling girl enjoyed this movie immensely. A signature Barbie movie suitable for starting your collection.
Barbie and The Diamond Castle
A cute Barbie movie featuring more cute pets and a Pegasus, my daughter really enjoyed this one as Barbie and her best friend have many adventures together in fantastic landscapes. My daughter loved the landscapes in this particular Barbie movie and I have caught her humming to the music played at the start and end of the movie with the best friends singing with their guitars. The story is quite long and is only for dedicated Barbie fans, but The Diamond Castle has been viewed a few times (but not as much as Swan Lake). However, a note of warning – the scary bits can be somewhat prolonged in this Barbie film, which means it’s better if a child older than five years views it.
Barbie: Fairytopia
he Barbie Fairytopia collection includes Fairytopia (the original), Mermaidia and Magic of the Rainbow. Lots of fairies, flowers and insect friends abound in these very cutesy and girly productions. The main drawcard for my daughter in the Fairytopia series was the fairies, friendly stories and adorable small creatures. As it cuts out most of the villains and scary bits often in Barbie movies, I’d say the Fairytopia series is appropriate for a much younger age group who are just starting on Barbie movies. My daughter liked Fairytopia when she was four and five but became more interested in the stronger plotlines of other Barbie films as she got older.

Barbie of Swan Lake
Another beautiful production from Mattel, in the spirit of the Princess and the Pauper, Barbie of Swan Lake involves lots of dancing, singing and a magical unicorn and town. Once again, there are scary moments in this movie due to the villain Rothbart, but since Barbie has help from the Fairy Queen it’s not quite as dark as some other Barbie movies. Lots of Tchaikovsky music and lots of lush landscapes that my daughter really liked. This is her second favourite Barbie movie and I found my four year old son really liked Swan Lake too (he only likes some Barbie movies).

Do you adore Barbie? Do you want to take your daughter on a very special vacation? Do you just want to do something weird and different when you go on your next vacation? Then perhaps you'd like to stay in a...
Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus
My daughter likes the 3D glasses you can get with this DVD, which, in her eyes, makes the movie more interesting to watch. We enjoyed the Magic of Pegasus and my daughter liked the adventures in this movie more than other Barbie movies as there’s lots of subplot adventures wrapped up inside the main story. Lots of beautiful computer generated landscapes abound. Scary bits well were outweighed by the ability of Barbie and her prince to be creative and solve the problems fairly easily. You’ll like the ice skating, riddles and travelling in this Barbie movie and I recommend it for a good all-round Barbie session with girls four years and up.
Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses
A nice Barbie movie with lots of dancing and toned down, but still attractive colours. However, the plot in this movie wasn’t
as compelling as The Princess and the Pauper or Swan Lake as having more than a couple of main characters makes it a little less easy for youngsters, although they do provide great dance sequences. Based roughly on a "Cinderella" story and with classical music that gives it a certain flavour, it looked OK when I bought it. My daughter didn't end up watching it very much compared to her other Barbie movies though. I have heard that some people's kids adore it....but don't know if it is the first Barbie movie or one of many they have seen.

I think that Barbie a fashion fairytale was the best because the pictures are beautiful, it's a new idea, and it was very well done. The toys from that movie are also great.
